Envirothon
is North America's largest high school environmental education
competition. It involves
more than 500 000 students across North America annually with a
mission to develop knowledgeable,
skilled and dedicated citizens who are willing and prepared to
work towards achieving a balance between quality of life and
quality of the environment.
Throughout
the school year students ranging from grade 9 to 12 explore four
environmental themes:
aquatic ecology, forests, soils and wildlife, plus a fifth topic
which changes annually. Students will participate in four
hands-on and minds-on workshops led by local educators and
natural resource professionals within the region. In spring, all
teams compete in a regional competition that tests the
material learned at the four workshops and includes an oral
presentation based on the year’s 5th topic with the
top team proceeding to the provincial Envirothon. The winners of
the provincial competition go on to compete in the
Canon Envirothon-North American Competition which is in
Arizona this year.
The River institute has been coordinating the SD&G Envirothon
for the past 5 years
