Who we are
The St.
Lawrence River Institute of Environmental Sciences
is a non-government organization dedicated to
education and research on large river ecosystems.
It is a learning and discovery centre that moves
scientific inquiry beyond government, activism, and
academia, and places it instead into the very heart
of the community.
Using the
St. Lawrence River as its natural laboratory, the
River Institute undertakes research that contributes
to the scientific foundation of how large river
ecosystems and their components function. Working
partnerships with universities, governments,
industry, and communities define the River
Institute's ability to addresses local, national and
international needs.
Through its
education programs, the River Institute introduces
thousands of students to the reality of science, and
provides powerful role models for young people
considering a career in science. A variety of
outreach programs ensure that messages are shared
with the community at large.

"The St. Lawrence River Institute is a discovery
centre of research, education, action, and
innovation. The model it has pioneered represents a
vision for what an environmental organization of the
future could look like. Born from the curiosity of
one community, it is non-partisan, non-governmental,
non-biased and non-agendaed. Its
holistic-integrative approach has the power to
become a transformative, widely applied model in the
emerging global environmental conversation."
