Envirothon Envirothon is an environmental competition for high school teams to test their knowledge and ability in topics such as aquatic ecology, forestry, soils, wildlife, and biodiversity. The River Institute organizes and delivers many of the preparatory workshops for the student teams, and organizes the Regional Competition for Eastern Ontario each year at the Cooper Marsh Visitor Centre in South Lancaster, Ontario. Rotary Adventures in the Environment This program is sponsored by the Cornwall Sunrise Rotary Club and offered to senior high school students with an interest in Environmental Science. Led by River Institute staff, the students participate in 4 days of activities that include sampling fish and invertebrates in the river, laboratory analyses of water samples, exploration in an old growth forest, a biodiversity excursion at Cooper Marsh, a bat cave expedition, and Shoreline Clean Up. Testimonials "I really enjoyed being in the marsh and just being stuck and getting soaked. It was a lot of fun. It was awesome!" "It's been a long time since my first Adventure in the Environment, and a lot has changed in my life since then. I don't know exactly why or how I was chosen to participate in the Rotary Club's Adventure in the Environment program, but I truly feel it has lead me to where I am today. In grade 11, I had the opportunity to work with researchers at the St. Lawrence River Institute, and do real life environmental science. I am now a graduate student in the Environmental and Life Sciences program at Trent University. I work with municipal, government, and university partners on the emerging issues of urban ecology. Without that first glimpse into what environmental science was, I may have never found my calling. My heartfelt thanks go out to the Rotary Club, and Dr. Hickey at the St. Lawrence River Institute."
