March 3rd

INSECTS

In this program, participants will learn and practice insect identification using real insect specimens!  Participants will get a chance to learn how to catch and release insects, and try it out with nets provided for the group.  River Institute educators will also share information about the various groups of insects and their importance to the food web.  Insects from the River Institute’s collection will be available for observation.

March 14th

INVERTEBRATES

Join the River Institute for a family program on invertebrates!  This is a fascinating group of animals which is easy and fun to observe!  Participants will learn about the various groups of invertebrates and their importance in the food web. River Institute educators will also share information about the use of invertebrates as a means of determining water quality. Invertebrates from the River Institute’s collection will be available for observation.

April 14th (at Guindon Park)

AMPHIBIANS

In this program participants will go out with nets and try to catch amphibians: frogs and turtles. They will learn about the basic needs of animals and the life cycle of frogs and will discover what an environment is and why it is important to protect wetlands. Participants will have a chance to view basking turtles, and River Institute educators may also bring radio-telemetry equipment to track previously tagged turtles.   

May 5th

WILD FLOWERS

Before the leaves come out on the trees, many beautiful flowers like violets and trilliums will take advantage of the spring sunshine.  Come and find out what local spring beauties you might find, and learn about their interesting natural history and traditional uses.  This program will be delivered outdoors if weather permits, with a walk around the centre to look at the flowers in bloom.  Photographers welcome! 

June 2nd

ANIMAL BEHAVIOUR

Animals behave in some of the most peculiar and fascinating ways. In this workshop, participants will learn how animals behave and interact in their environment. Some topics which may be covered include feeding, habitat choice, anti-predator behaviour, parental care, mating, and social behaviour. Come learn how animals are like people in this fun and educational program for the whole family.
